Berlin  (ANN)- European leaders have voiced growing concern following a decision by Donald Trump to withdraw 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany, a move seen as another sign of weakening transatlantic ties.
The announcement has triggered strong reactions across Europe, particularly among NATO’s eastern members, who rely heavily on U.S. military support amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
European Leaders Warn of Alliance Strain
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the decision as part of a “disastrous trend,” warning that the growing divide between Europe and Washington threatens the unity of the Western alliance.
“The greatest threat to the transatlantic community are not its external enemies, but the ongoing disintegration of our alliance,” Tusk said in a statement.
Meanwhile, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged Europe’s vulnerabilities, emphasizing the need for stronger regional defense cooperation.
“Europe is not strong enough… it falls on us as leaders to step up,” Starmer said, calling for Britain to play a central role in rebuilding European defense strength.
Germany Calls for Greater Self-Reliance
Germany’s defense leadership echoed similar concerns, stressing that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security rather than relying heavily on U.S. protection.
The troop withdrawal is expected to take place over the next six to twelve months, according to the Pentagon.

Analysts say the withdrawal may not significantly impact military capability but carries strong political symbolism.
Security expert Michał Matlak noted that while 5,000 troops represent only a small portion of U.S. forces in Europe, the decision signals a deeper shift.
“This is not a turning point, but another step toward a transatlantic divorce,” he said.
Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker described the move as a “demonstrative signal” of dissatisfaction with Germany, rather than a major operational change.

NATO and Future Uncertainty
The NATO alliance now faces renewed questions about its future role and cohesion.
The United States currently maintains tens of thousands of troops across Europe, with the largest deployments in Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. A recent U.S. defense bill prevents troop levels from dropping below 76,000, limiting the scale of potential reductions.

A Turning Point for Europe?
The development has intensified debate within Europe about defense independence. While there is broad agreement on the need to strengthen military capabilities, divisions remain over how far Europe should distance itself from the United States and what role NATO should play moving forward.
Despite uncertainty, analysts agree that Europe is entering a new phase—one where strategic autonomy and increased defense spending are becoming unavoidable priorities.
