Tehran- Washington  (ANN)- In a dramatic and fast-moving 24-hour period, tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have escalated, with conflicting statements from the United States and Iran raising serious concerns about global energy security and maritime safety.
A Sudden Opening — Then Uncertainty
The situation began on Friday afternoon when Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, announced via social media that the Strait of Hormuz would remain “completely open” for the duration of an ongoing ceasefire period. The statement initially signaled a potential de-escalation in one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
However, optimism quickly faded.
Trump’s Mixed Message
Moments later, former U.S. President Donald Trump responded publicly, thanking Iran for keeping the waterway open. Yet, he simultaneously confirmed that the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports would remain in place until broader negotiations were “100% complete.”
This dual message introduced immediate uncertainty into the already fragile situation.

Europe Steps In
In response to growing instability, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to lead an international maritime security mission. The initiative, backed by approximately 40 countries, aims to ensure freedom of navigation in the region “as soon as conditions allow.”

Iran Pushes Back
Hours later, Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, strongly rejected Trump’s claims, labeling them “false.” He warned that if the U.S. blockade continues, Iran would reconsider keeping the Strait open.

Confusion at Sea
Despite political tensions, shipping data from maritime tracking platforms indicated that some vessels continued transiting the Strait into Saturday morning. However, the situation shifted once again when Iranian state media reported that the military had reasserted control over the waterway.
According to official statements, Iran declared that passage through the Strait now requires its explicit approval, citing the United States’ failure to meet its obligations.
Shortly after this announcement, vessel tracking data showed ships abruptly changing course and returning to their original ports — a clear indication of rising risk and uncertainty.
Global Implications
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically vital chokepoints in the global energy supply chain, with a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments passing through it daily. Any disruption — even temporary — can have immediate effects on oil prices, insurance costs, and geopolitical stability.
The rapid sequence of contradictory statements and actions over the past 24 hours underscores the fragility of the current ceasefire and highlights the potential for further escalation.

Araweelo Analysis
Araweelo News Network analysts warn that the conflicting narratives from Washington and Tehran suggest not just miscommunication, but a deeper strategic standoff. The presence of European powers signals growing international concern, while the behavior of commercial vessels reflects a lack of confidence in guarantees from either side.
Unless a clear and unified framework is established, the Strait of Hormuz may remain a flashpoint capable of triggering wider regional instability.
