Tehran(ANN)– International delegations from across the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Latin America have begun arriving in Tehran to attend funeral and farewell ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to Iranian authorities, Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport activated full reception and protocol measures to receive foreign dignitaries participating in the official ceremonies.
The body of Khamenei, along with those killed alongside him, was transferred to Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Musalla, where public and official mourning ceremonies commenced. Foreign officials, religious leaders and representatives of Iran’s recognized religious minorities attended the gathering to pay their respects.
Among the first international participants were Islamic scholars and religious figures from Indonesia, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Iraq, Morocco and Türkiye. Official delegations from Turkmenistan, Russia, China, Spain, Ecuador and Bolivia also joined the ceremonies.
Iranian officials say Khamenei was killed in a U.S.-Israeli airstrike on Tehran on February 28, 2026, during the opening phase of the recent regional conflict. The United States and Israel have not publicly accepted Iran’s characterization of the events.
The funeral program, organized under the slogan “We Must Rise,” includes ceremonies in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, as well as memorial events in the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala at the request of Iraqi religious and political leaders.
Iranian authorities said the burial was delayed because of security conditions during the conflict. The final burial ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad following the completion of nationwide and regional commemorations.
The ceremonies are expected to draw current and former political leaders, senior government officials, religious scholars, academics and representatives from numerous countries, reflecting the international attention surrounding the funeral of Iran’s longtime leader.
