TEHRAN (ANN) – Iran says it is pursuing diplomacy while maintaining full military readiness, signaling that tensions in the region remain volatile despite ongoing negotiations.
According to Tasnim News Agency, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, declared in a televised address Saturday night that Tehran is prepared for both dialogue and confrontation.
Qalibaf emphasized that Iran does not trust its adversaries, particularly the United States, warning that the country is ready for any potential military conflict. He described the current situation as the beginning of a “third imposed war,” claiming that past conflicts were also triggered during periods of negotiation, often following targeted assassinations of key commanders.
“Diplomacy of Power”
Qalibaf stated that Iran has leveraged lessons from a recent 12-day conflict in June 2025, asserting that Iranian forces demonstrated superiority in planning, coordination, and battlefield execution. While acknowledging that the United States possesses greater overall military resources, he argued that Iran considers itself victorious based on performance and outcomes.
He described Tehran’s strategy as a “diplomacy of power,” combining negotiations with military preparedness to strengthen its position.
Military Claims and Strategic Control
Highlighting recent military developments, Qalibaf claimed Iranian forces intercepted between 170 and 180 drones during what he described as a joint US-Israeli offensive that began on February 28. He also referenced the downing of advanced fighter jets, attributing these actions to months of strategic planning and operational readiness.
The speaker stressed that military strength alone does not determine victory, pointing instead to planning, resilience, and public support as decisive factors.
Strait of Hormuz Tensions
Qalibaf strongly rejected recent US efforts to impose a naval blockade, asserting Iran’s control over the critical Strait of Hormuz. He warned that any escalation in the region could have far-reaching consequences.
“Iran maintains full control,” he said, adding that no vessel could pass through the waterway without Iran’s awareness or capability to respond.
Regional Dynamics and Ceasefire Conditions
The Iranian official revealed that diplomatic proposals have been communicated through intermediaries, including Pakistan, and reviewed by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
He also stated that any ceasefire agreement must include Hezbollah, arguing that the group’s involvement in the conflict necessitates its inclusion in any truce.
Warning to Washington
Qalibaf warned that threats and ultimatums attributed to Donald Trump would not pressure Tehran, cautioning that further escalation could have consequences beyond the region.
He concluded by reaffirming Iran’s desire for a lasting peace but stressed that deep mistrust of the United States remains a major obstacle to any durable agreement.
