Iran Calls for Regional Cooperation, Tehran is seeking nuclear weapons’ foreign ministers

TEHRAN  (ANN)—
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has announced that the foreign ministers of several regional Arab states are expected to meet in Oman on Monday to discuss a proposed framework for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, Pezeshkian said Iran had already held discussions with Oman and reached an understanding on a specific navigation framework. He said the proposed arrangement would then be communicated to the relevant international maritime organization.
Pezeshkian made the remarks during an interview with India Today on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, where he also highlighted Iran’s historical and cultural ties with India and the strategic importance of the Iranian port of Chabahar.
Hormuz Navigation
Addressing concerns over shipping and energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, Pezeshkian said Tehran was prepared to cooperate with neighboring countries to establish a framework for maritime navigation.
He said the proposed route would remain open under international law, but linked the arrangement to an end to what Tehran describes as U.S. aggression against Iran.
“In that framework, the route will be open under international law, provided that the US stops its aggression and unjust attacks,”
Pezeshkian said, according to Tasnim.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors, carrying a substantial share of global oil and energy shipments. Any disruption or restrictions affecting navigation through the waterway could have significant consequences for regional and international energy markets.
Iran Calls for Regional Cooperation
Pezeshkian said Iran had no fundamental problem with its neighboring countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Qatar, as well as Russia and China.
However, he objected to the presence of U.S. military bases in the region being used, according to his account, for attacks against Iran.
The Iranian president also rejected the characterization of Tehran as the party responsible for the conflict, saying Iran had acted in self-defense following what he described as U.S. and Israeli aggression.

He urged regional governments to cooperate on establishing peace and security rather than allowing external powers to deepen divisions among neighboring states.

Chabahar and India
During the interview, Pezeshkian also emphasized Iran’s interest in expanding economic cooperation with India.

He described Chabahar Port as a strategic transit crossroads connecting the south with the north and linking eastern and western markets. He said Tehran was ready to facilitate greater Indian investment and joint ventures in Chabahar and other sectors of the Iranian economy.
The port has long been viewed by India as an important route for accessing Afghanistan and Central Asian markets while reducing reliance on routes through Pakistan.
BRICS and the Global Economy
Pezeshkian further argued that the BRICS grouping could play a greater role in countering what he called U.S. unilateralism and sanctions.
He said BRICS members should expand independent trade, investment and economic cooperation, while the New Development Bank could support joint investment projects and help reduce participating countries’ dependence on the U.S. dollar and American financial system.
According to Pezeshkian, such cooperation could contribute to a more independent and multipolar international economic order.
Nuclear Programme
On Iran’s nuclear programme, Pezeshkian rejected allegations that Tehran is seeking nuclear weapons.
He said Iran remains committed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and is prepared to negotiate within the framework of international law.
He also condemned attacks against Iranian leaders, military commanders, scientists and infrastructure, as well as restrictions affecting food, medicine and trade.

Pezeshkian maintained that Iran does not seek war but would not surrender to sanctions or military pressure.
Regional Stakes
The proposed meeting in Oman comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the broader security environment in the Gulf and wider Middle East.

If confirmed and implemented, a regional navigation framework could become an important mechanism for reducing uncertainty around commercial shipping. However, the details of the proposed agreement, the countries participating in the meeting, and its status with the relevant international maritime authorities remain to be clarified.
