Puntland Forces Clash with Somali Federal-Aligned Troops in Galkayo; Deni Defends Operation

GAROWE (ANN) – Fighting erupted in Galkayo between Puntland security forces and troops aligned with Somalia’s Federal Government, marking a new escalation in tensions between Garowe and Mogadishu. Puntland authorities said the operation targeted what they described as federal military deployments threatening Puntland’s security, while reports indicate casualties on both sides. Puntland also claimed to have detained a number of opposing fighters and seized military equipment, although those claims have not been independently verified.

In an official statement dated 4 August 2026, the Puntland Presidency accused the Federal Government of transporting additional troops and weapons into the Mudug region through the Galmudug side of Galkayo, alleging that the deployments were intended to destabilize Puntland. The statement called on the Federal Government to halt further military movements and urged cooperation with Galmudug to preserve peace in the divided city.
Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni defended the military operation, saying:
“The military operation in Galkayo is a message to anyone working against the security and authority of the Puntland Government.”
Deni also held Somalia’s Federal Government responsible for the growing tensions and warned against further escalation.
The clashes have heightened concerns over stability in central Somalia, with residents reporting heavy gunfire and displacement from affected neighborhoods. Independent casualty figures remain unconfirmed, and the Federal Government’s detailed response was not immediately available at the time of publication.
