HARGEISA (ANN) – The Somaliland government has withdrawn a recently introduced tax policy after widespread public criticism and growing opposition from political parties, business groups, and sections of civil society.
The decision comes after strong objections to the new taxes, which many argued would place an additional burden on citizens already struggling with rising living costs, inflation, and a slowing economy.
Somaliland’s main opposition party, KAAH, criticized the government’s tax policy, arguing that imposing new taxes during a period of economic hardship was ill-timed and lacked a proper legal foundation. The party maintained that the tax measures had not followed the necessary legal procedures before being announced and warned that they would further strain households and businesses.
Members of the public also voiced concern, describing the proposed taxes as unfair to families facing severe economic difficulties. Critics argued that introducing additional financial obligations without addressing the country’s worsening cost-of-living crisis would have deepened the economic challenges confronting ordinary citizens.
The government’s decision to reverse the policy has renewed debate over its decision-making process. Political observers note that this is not the first time the administration has announced major policy measures affecting politics, security, or the economy only to later reverse them after public pressure.
Analysts say such repeated policy reversals raise questions about whether major government decisions receive sufficient legal, economic, and technical review before being implemented. They argue that significant policies should undergo comprehensive consultation and careful assessment to ensure they are practical, lawful, and responsive to the country’s realities before being announced.
The latest reversal highlights increasing public expectations for greater transparency, stronger policy planning, and broader consultation on decisions that directly affect the lives and livelihoods of Somaliland’s citizens.
