Hargeisa (ANN)-The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Cirro, joined thousands of citizens in commemorating the 35th anniversary of Somaliland’s restoration of its sovereignty during a grand national celebration held in the heart of Hargeisa on 18 May.
The large-scale ceremony, hosted at the main national celebration grounds in the capital, brought together the Vice President of Somaliland, speakers of both houses, the Chairman of the Supreme Court, former presidents and vice presidents, members of parliament, ministers, diplomats, international guests from several countries, women’s groups, intellectuals and distinguished members of society.
During the event, the various branches of Somaliland’s armed forces staged a highly coordinated military parade, showcasing professional drills, marching formations, armored vehicles and modern military equipment that attracted widespread public attention across the city streets and celebration grounds.
All divisions of the Somaliland national forces participated in the ceremony, presenting guard formations, ceremonial displays and military demonstrations reflecting the country’s growing institutional strength and national unity.
The Minister of Interior of Somaliland, Abdalle Mohamed Arab, delivered brief remarks during the occasion, expressing appreciation to the people of Somaliland and the national armed forces for their continued commitment to peace, stability and nationhood.
President Cirro, in a wide-ranging keynote address delivered during the 35th anniversary celebrations, congratulated the Somaliland people on what he described as a historic occasion — the first 18th May commemoration celebrated under international recognition.
The President also warned the international community against attempts to force together incompatible political systems and states, urging nations to follow the path that led to the recognition of the Republic of Somaliland.
This year’s commemoration marks a defining chapter in Somaliland’s modern history, becoming the first anniversary celebration held after Somaliland formally joined the community of recognized nations around the world.
