NEW YORK  (ANN) — Somaliland’s political campaign has moved into one of the world’s most visible diplomatic arenas as members of the Somaliland diaspora gather in New York during the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly.
A public Somaliland Recognition Rally has been organized at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, near United Nations headquarters, bringing Somaliland supporters into the streets as presidents, prime ministers and senior diplomats from around the world converge on New York.
Somaliland’s representative to the United States, Ambassador Bashir Goth, announced the rally and said organizers had obtained a permit for the gathering. The event is intended to publicly promote Somaliland’s demand for international recognition at a time when the diplomatic community is concentrated in New York.
The timing is significant. The 81st session of the UN General Assembly opened on September 8, while the high-level week runs from September 22 to September 29. The general debate is bringing heads of state, government leaders and other senior representatives to UN headquarters.
A Political Message Outside the UN
For Somaliland, the streets around the United Nations offer something it does not possess inside the General Assembly chamber: a public platform to demonstrate diaspora support for its political aspirations.
Somaliland is not a UN member state and therefore does not participate in the General Assembly in the same manner as the 193 UN member states. Its diplomatic activity during the New York meetings is consequently taking place largely through meetings, contacts with officials, media engagements and events outside the formal Assembly proceedings.
The rally gives that campaign a highly visible public dimension.
Somaliland supporters are seeking to place recognition, strategic cooperation and the territory’s position on the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea directly into conversations taking place around the UN.
What Is Happening Around the Square?
Available reporting confirms that the rally was scheduled for September 23 at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza and that Somaliland supporters were mobilizing for the event. Somali-language media have also reported the demonstration as a major public activity accompanying Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro’s” presence in New York.
However, Araweelo News Network has not independently verified the exact number of people present at the plaza. Claims circulating about thousands of participants should therefore be treated cautiously until supported by direct observation, organizers’ figures, police estimates or independently verified photographs and video.
The rally nevertheless places Somaliland’s political question directly outside the institution where some of the world’s most important diplomatic discussions are taking place.
New York Becomes Another Diplomatic Front
President Irro’s presence in New York follows his reported diplomatic activity in Washington, where Somaliland has been presenting its case not only through historical and political arguments but also through questions of regional security, trade, investment and the strategic importance of Berbera and the Gulf of Aden.
Foreign Policy reported on September 23 that Irro travelled from Washington to New York during the UN General Assembly period to pursue greater U.S. engagement with Somaliland.
The wider diplomatic environment is particularly important this year. The UN high-level week is taking place amid major international disputes, including conflicts involving Iran, Israel and Yemen, making the security of the Red Sea and surrounding maritime routes part of the broader strategic conversation in New York.
For Somaliland, this creates an opportunity to connect its geographical position with wider international discussions about maritime security, trade routes, investment and regional stability.
Somalia Also Active in New York
At the same time, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is also in New York participating in the UN General Assembly programme and holding bilateral meetings with foreign leaders.
Somali media reported meetings between Hassan Sheikh and the leaders of Serbia, Senegal and Zimbabwe, as well as Pakistan’s prime minister, with discussions covering bilateral relations, security, development and other shared interests.
This means that Somaliland’s public campaign is unfolding alongside Somalia’s own diplomatic activity in the same city.
The contrast places New York at the centre of competing diplomatic narratives: Somaliland seeking wider international recognition and Somalia continuing to defend its position on sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Real Test Beyond the Rally
The images from Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza may become an important part of Somaliland’s international messaging, but the longer-term significance of the New York campaign will depend on what follows the public demonstration.
The central questions are whether the campaign produces new diplomatic contacts, deeper government-to-government engagement, practical security or economic cooperation, and sustained international discussion of Somaliland’s status.
The rally can demonstrate public support. Diplomatic recognition, however, remains a decision for governments and international institutions.
For Somaliland, therefore, New York represents both a public stage and a diplomatic test: whether the energy visible outside the United Nations can translate into relationships and political engagement that continue after the UN high-level week ends.
