Hargeisa (ANN)— The Government of the Republic of Somaliland has firmly rejected what it describes as “misleading and unfounded claims” made by the Federal Government of Somalia regarding Somaliland’s diplomatic relations, particularly its engagement with Israel.
In an official press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation, Somaliland stated that Somalia has no legal authority to interfere in its foreign policy decisions. The government emphasized that Somaliland is a sovereign state whose independence dates back to June 26, 1960—prior to its voluntary union with Somalia.
“Somaliland’s sovereignty neither originated from nor is contingent upon any authority in Mogadishu,” the statement declared.
The government further argued that the concept of “territorial integrity,” often invoked by Somalia, is misplaced in this context. According to the statement, the 1960 union lacked a binding legal foundation capable of dissolving Somaliland’s independent statehood. Somaliland reaffirmed that it restored its sovereignty in 1991 and has since maintained full governance within its borders.
Highlighting its achievements, Somaliland pointed to its democratic institutions, credible elections, internal stability, and contributions to regional security, including counter-terrorism and anti-piracy efforts.
In contrast, the statement criticized Somalia’s reliance on foreign security assistance, raising concerns about its long-term stability.
The government also defended its diplomatic engagement with Israel, stating that all international partnerships are conducted in accordance with international law and norms.
Concluding the statement, Somaliland reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence and regional stability but stressed that its sovereignty remains “non-negotiable.”
