Dialysis Crisis Sparks Public Outcry in Somaliland as Patients Plead for Life-Saving Treatment

Hargeisa (ANN)– A growing controversy over dialysis services at Hargeisa General Hospital has ignited public debate across Somaliland after kidney patients staged an emotional appeal to President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), saying their lives depend on urgent government action.
Several patients gathered outside the Presidential Office on Tuesday, calling on the Head of State to intervene over what they described as inadequate access to dialysis treatment.
“Mr. President, hear our voices. This is the suffering we endure every day. Give us treatment, or let us be free from this pain,” one patient said while speaking to local media.
The demonstration quickly drew widespread attention on social media, where many Somaliland citizens expressed sympathy for the patients and urged the government to prioritize healthcare services for people living with kidney failure.
The debate intensified after government officials responded by suggesting the controversy had political dimensions. During a media briefing, the Minister of Health said the issue was being influenced by political actors and external interests but did not publicly provide evidence or identify those allegedly involved.
The minister’s remarks triggered criticism from members of the public, journalists, and commentators, many of whom argued that the concerns raised by patients should be addressed as a healthcare issue rather than viewed through a political lens.
Poet Yusuf Sha’ir also weighed in, urging the President to listen directly to the citizens seeking help.
“The people standing before you are the same citizens who entrusted you with leadership. Their voices deserve to be heard,” he said.
Dialysis: A Life-Saving Treatment
Dialysis, commonly known as kidney washing, is a critical medical treatment for patients whose kidneys can no longer remove waste, toxins, and excess fluid from the blood.
During treatment:
Blood is removed from the patient’s body.
It passes through a dialysis machine that filters harmful waste and excess water.
The cleaned blood is returned safely to the body.
Most kidney failure patients require dialysis several times each week to stay alive. Interruptions to treatment can place patients at serious risk of life-threatening complications.
As public pressure continues to mount, many citizens are calling for immediate action to ensure reliable dialysis services and improve healthcare for patients who depend on life-saving treatment.
