Hargeisa, Somaliland (ANN)– The Vice President of the Republic of Somaliland, Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, has participated in the national celebration of International Labour Day, highlighting the critical role of workers in building the country’s future and reaffirming the government’s commitment to employment and development.
The event, held at the Government Workers Hall in Hargeisa, brought together senior officials including deputy ministers from the Ministry of Labour, Social and Family Affairs, leadership figures from the Waddani Party, and representatives of public sector workers, alongside invited guests.
This year’s Labour Day theme, “Workers are the Backbone of National Building and Development,” underscored the importance of the workforce in driving Somaliland’s economic growth and stability. Speakers at the ceremony emphasized the contributions of labourers across all sectors and called for stronger policies to support workers’ rights and welfare.
In his keynote address, Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi congratulated workers across the nation and offered prayers for continued health and prosperity:
“First of all, I congratulate you on International Labour Day, and I pray that Allah grants us the opportunity to reach the next year in good health.”
He noted that this year’s commemoration comes at a significant time for Somaliland, pointing to what he described as growing international recognition and progress on the global stage.
“Today’s event is different from previous years. Our country has made strides toward international recognition. As a government, we are committed to creating job opportunities for our youth and encouraging innovation and initiative among our people,” he stated.
The Vice President reiterated the administration’s focus on tackling unemployment, particularly among young people, and fostering an environment that supports entrepreneurship and economic participation.
Officials from the Ministry of Labour also used the occasion to highlight ongoing efforts to improve labour conditions, strengthen institutional support for workers, and expand social protection programs.
International Labour Day, observed annually on May 1, serves as a global platform to recognize the achievements of workers and advocate for fair labour standards. In Somaliland, the day continues to gain prominence as a moment of reflection on both progress made and challenges ahead in building a resilient workforce.
