Mogadishu (ANN) — The United States Embassy in Mogadishu has issued a security advisory warning about recent military movements and escalating tensions in the disputed border areas between Somaliland and Puntland, particularly around Las Anod.
According to the statement dated 29 August 2026, the U.S. Embassy urged all parties, including the Sool Regional Administration, to exercise maximum restraint and immediately work to de-escalate tensions.
The Embassy warned that prolonged instability could create security vacuums that violent extremist organisations and criminal networks might exploit.
The advisory comes amid heightened tensions and reported military movements in areas surrounding Las Anod, a strategically sensitive city at the centre of competing territorial and political claims involving Somaliland, Puntland and emerging local administrations.
The U.S. Embassy’s warning highlights growing international concern that further escalation could worsen the security situation and create wider consequences for the region.
