The Government of Somaliland stands at a pivotal juncture in its quest for international recognition, and in this light, it is imperative for the President to appoint a dedicated steering committee. This committee should collaborate closely with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Somaliland, which plays a crucial role in advocating for our cause. The steering committee should be headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs to ensure strong diplomatic engagement, accompanied by at least three other prominent cabinet members, such as the Minister of Planning, Minster of Investment and Industries and the Minister of Information, Culture, and National Guidance. Including influential members from the Somali diaspora, esteemed intellectuals, and experienced politicians will enhance the committee’s credibility and efficacy, allowing it to leverage a wide array of perspectives and expertise.
For over three decades, Somaliland’s intellectuals, politicians, and academics have meticulously scrutinized the critical issues surrounding its quest for statehood and recognition, and I have personally contributed more than 40 documents that delve into these complex themes. However, the current roadmap distinguishes itself due to its significant endorsement by high-ranking officials in the United Kingdom Parliament, thus elevating its status. The initiative is notably championed by key figures such as Rt Hon Sir Gavin Williamson CBE MP, who serves as Chair; Kim Johnson MP, appointed as Co-Chair; Abtisam Mohamed MP as Vice-Chair; and Lord Udny Lister as an Officer. The collective influence of these members of Parliament and House of Lords endows the document with extraordinary political weight, as they possess the power to mobilize legislative support and shift public discourse.
Consequently, this roadmap transcends the boundaries of a mere academic or policy paper; it emerges as a vital diplomatic instrument with the potential to create significant real-world impact. It is underpinned by the support of senior British lawmakers and former ministers who are well-positioned to turn their backing into tangible actions within the UK Parliament, thereby generating momentum on the international stage.
To fully capitalize on this exceptional opportunity, it is imperative for the Government of Somaliland to take decisive and strategic action. This can be achieved by the establishment of a dedicated steering committee that includes not only experienced diplomats but also esteemed legal experts and influential leaders from the Somaliland diaspora around the world.
The primary objective of this committee should be to engage in direct and proactive dialogue with the relevant parliamentary group in the United Kingdom. This means cultivating relationships with key lawmakers and stakeholders who can champion Somaliland’s cause within the UK government. By forging such alliances and partnerships, the committee can transform a static roadmap—previously a mere proposal—into a dynamic and persuasive political tool designed to effectively advance Somaliland’s agenda for international recognition.
In this process, it is essential to develop a comprehensive strategy that outlines specific goals, methodologies, and timelines for the committee’s outreach efforts. Additionally, the committee should leverage multimedia campaigns, targeted communications, and public engagement initiatives to raise awareness about Somaliland’s unique situation and promote its aspirations on a broader scale.
This transformative approach will not only enhance Somaliland’s diplomatic outreach and visibility on the international stage but will also promote a cohesive and unified strategy for navigating the complexities of international relations. By working collaboratively, the committee can skillfully address challenges and seize opportunities that arise in the pursuit of our long-sought recognition as a sovereign state.
Through these efforts, Somaliland can make significant strides toward achieving the international acknowledgment it has long desired.
God bless Somaliland.
