Hargeisa, (ANN)– Somaliland Police have arrested one of the country’s well-known social media personalities, Ubah Abdirahman, widely known online as “Goosha.”
Ubax, who gained significant popularity on Facebook for her outspoken commentary and social media presence, was reportedly detained in Hargeisa. However, the exact reasons for her arrest remain unclear, as no official statement has yet been released by the Somaliland authorities explaining the legal grounds for the detention.
The arrest has sparked public discussion across social media platforms, with supporters demanding transparency regarding the case.
Opposition Reaction
The Chairman of the KAAH Political Party in the Maroodijeex region, Abdirizak Kosar, publicly criticized the arrest in a Facebook post. He described the detention as “illegal and arbitrary,” placing responsibility on the ruling government.
“I am very sorry for the illegal and arbitrary arrest of Ubah Abdirahman (Goosha). The responsibility for this illegal arrest lies with the ruling government, both in terms of guilt and shame,” he stated.
Kosar further called for her immediate release and urged the police to adhere strictly to the rule of law.
“We call on the Police to abide by the law and not take political orders. The Police must refrain from violating the sanctity of the home, executing arrest warrants without a court order, and any actions that demonstrate suppression of freedom of expression, trampling on the rights, honor, and dignity of valuable women and citizens of Somaliland in general,” he added.
Growing Debate on Freedom of Expression
The arrest has fueled renewed debate about freedom of expression and the role of social media in Somaliland’s political landscape. Civil society voices and online commentators have called on authorities to clarify the charges and ensure due process.
As of the time of publication, Somaliland Police have not issued an official statement detailing the charges against Ubax Abdirahman.
