Mogadishu, (ANN)—The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has launched a military operation targeting forces loyal to the South West State leader, Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, escalating an already tense political dispute between the federal government and the regional administration.
According to officials, federal government forces moved into and took control of the strategic city of Baidoa following clashes with regional troops aligned with Laftagareen.
The confrontation is linked to a long-running disagreement over constitutional authority and the legality of term extensions within regional states.
The federal government has accused Laftagareen of unlawfully extending his term beyond its mandate, which it says expired in 2022. Mogadishu argues that attempts to maintain power outside the agreed framework undermine Somalia’s fragile federal system and democratic progress.
Sources indicate that as the military operation unfolded, Laftagareen left the country for Nairobi, amid reports that his administration was unable to sustain control in the face of advancing federal forces.
Meanwhile, at the presidential palace, Villa Somalia, President Hassan Sheikh convened a meeting with ambassadors and representatives of international organizations operating in the country. During the briefing, he outlined the government’s achievements in key areas including national security, preparations for direct elections, counterterrorism efforts, drought response, and initiatives aimed at strengthening national unity.
A statement from the Office of Information and Media Relations at Villa Somalia emphasized the importance of cooperation between the Somali government and international partners in stabilizing the country and advancing state-building efforts.
However, the timing of the military action has drawn criticism from political observers, who say it coincides with unresolved electoral disputes and growing tensions between federal and regional authorities. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in Somalia’s governance structure, particularly regarding the balance of power and constitutional interpretation within the federal system.
The developments in Baidoa mark a significant moment in Somalia’s internal politics, raising concerns over stability as the country continues to navigate complex electoral and security challenges.
