Paris / New York, (ANN) –France has strongly condemned recent attacks targeting United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon and warned Israel against any plans to occupy southern Lebanon, calling such moves “unjustified and dangerous.”
Speaking at a UN Security Council session, France’s envoy to the United Nations Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont emphasized that UN peacekeepers have been killed in the violence, highlighting the urgent need for international protection of these forces.
The condemnation comes amid a broader Middle East crisis, as hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon continue to escalate, and tensions with Iran rise. Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to curb the violence, with civilian casualties steadily increasing.
France called for immediate measures to ensure the safety of UN forces under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and urged all parties to pursue a diplomatic solution to prevent further destabilization of the region.
The envoy stressed that any military occupation of southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah maintains significant control, would heighten the risk of a wider conflict in the region, which is already facing a complex web of wars involving multiple actors.
As the international community watches closely, France continues to push for dialogue and protection of civilians, highlighting the vital role of the United Nations in maintaining peace and security in Lebanon.
