Tehran (ANN)-Iran has signaled its readiness to halt military operations, offering a conditional ceasefire amid escalating tensions with the United States and Israel.
In a statement released early Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that Iran’s Armed Forces would cease what he described as “defensive operations” if all US and Israeli attacks against the country are brought to an immediate end.
The statement, issued on behalf of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, followed diplomatic efforts led by Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, whom Araqchi praised for their role in facilitating dialogue aimed at ending the conflict.
According to Araqchi, the ceasefire proposal is tied to ongoing negotiations, reportedly based on a 15-point framework from the United States and a 10-point counter-proposal from Iran. The Iranian plan includes demands such as the withdrawal of US forces from the region, sanctions relief, and greater control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

As part of confidence-building measures, Iran also indicated that safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be ensured for a two-week period, subject to coordination with its military forces.
The current escalation traces back to the events of February 28, when Iran accused US and Israeli forces of launching a large-scale military campaign following the assassination of Ali Khamenei along with senior military officials and civilians. In response, Iran carried out retaliatory strikes targeting American and Israeli positions across the region.
Despite expectations of a rapid military outcome, the conflict has intensified, with Iran claiming to have inflicted significant damage on opposing forces while strengthening domestic unity.

Pakistani-mediated talks are now expected to take place in Islamabad during a proposed two-week ceasefire period. However, Iranian officials have stressed that negotiations represent a continuation of strategic confrontation through diplomatic means rather than a definitive end to hostilities.
The Supreme National Security Council described recent developments as a “historic victory,” asserting that the United States has been compelled to engage in negotiations under new terms, including guarantees of non-aggression.

While the path forward remains uncertain, the announcement marks a potential turning point, opening a narrow window for diplomacy in a rapidly evolving regional conflict.
