Paris (ANN)-Emmanuel Macron announced that he held a direct conversation with Masoud Pezeshkian on March 25, calling for an immediate reduction in regional tensions and the restoration of maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement shared on his official account on X, Macron stressed “the absolute necessity of ending unacceptable attacks against countries in the region,” while emphasizing the importance of protecting both energy infrastructure and civilian facilities.
The French president also underscored the urgent need to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz — a vital global oil transit route — warning that continued instability could have far-reaching economic and security consequences.
Macron further urged Tehran to engage “in good faith” in diplomatic negotiations aimed at de-escalation, while addressing international concerns over Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, as well as its regional activities.
In addition to security concerns, Macron raised humanitarian issues, calling on Iranian authorities to facilitate the swift return of French nationals Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris.
Escalating Conflict
The diplomatic outreach comes amid a sharp escalation in hostilities following reports that the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military campaign against Iran after the assassination of Ali Khamenei on February 28.
According to various accounts, the strikes have targeted both military and civilian infrastructure across Iran, resulting in significant casualties and widespread damage.
In retaliation, Iranian forces have reportedly launched waves of missile and drone attacks against U.S. and Israeli positions in the region, including sites in what Iran describes as occupied territories and strategic bases.
Growing International Concern
The intensifying conflict has raised global alarm over the risk of a broader regional war, particularly given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
Macron’s intervention reflects mounting international pressure for de-escalation, as world powers seek to prevent further destabilization in an already volatile region.
