Hargeisa, June 26, 2026 (ANN) – The President of the Republic of Somaliland, His Excellency Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), today participated in the national ceremony marking the 66th anniversary of Somaliland’s Independence Day of June 26, 1960. The event was held at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, leaders of the national political parties, traditional and cultural elders, diplomats representing friendly nations, and numerous invited guests.
The program featured cultural performances, entertainment, comedy, and presentations highlighting Somaliland’s struggle to restore its sovereignty and the historical experiences that followed the union of 1960. Speakers reflected on the significance of Somaliland’s independence, nationhood, and the importance of preserving unity, peace, and national identity.
In his address, President Cirro congratulated the people of Somaliland on the occasion and called upon citizens to further strengthen peace, solidarity, and patriotism. He also briefed attendees on his recent official visit to Israel and the meetings he held with the country’s leaders.
The President reaffirmed that Somaliland is a free and independent nation whose people have democratically determined their future through their own will and aspirations. He emphasized that Somalilanders have carefully reflected on their history and remain committed to shaping the future of their country in accordance with their collective interests and national values.
At midnight, marking the beginning of June 26, the President participated in the national flag-raising ceremony and received a salute from units of the Somaliland National Armed Forces. The celebrations concluded in an atmosphere of national pride, joy, and patriotism.
