Regional Reactions and Security Concerns

Cairo (ANN) – The Presidents of Somalia and Egypt have reaffirmed their joint position supporting Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, amid growing regional tensions following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held high-level talks in Cairo with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi focusing on bilateral relations, regional security cooperation, and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The leaders discussed strengthening cooperation in security, development, and diplomatic coordination.

Following the meeting, both sides highlighted the historic ties between Somalia and Egypt and their shared vision for peace and stability in the region.

Joint Position on Somalia’s Unity
During the discussions, President Hassan Sheikh emphasized the importance of protecting Somalia’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, warning against actions that could destabilize the region.

Egyptian President El-Sisi reaffirmed Cairo’s rejection of any move that undermines Somalia’s unity, stressing that recognition of any separate part of Somalia would violate international law and create a dangerous precedent for the Horn of Africa.

Egyptian officials have repeatedly described Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as a violation of international law and Somalia’s sovereignty, warning it could destabilize the Red Sea and Horn of Africa region.

Regional Reactions and Security Concerns
The talks come amid broader regional reactions to Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. Analysts say major regional powers are unlikely to accept expanded Israeli influence in Somalia due to security and geopolitical concerns.

Regional leaders, including Türkiye, have also reiterated support for Somalia’s territorial unity, emphasizing that the future of Somalia must reflect the will of all Somali people.

Somalia has continued diplomatic efforts to mobilize international support against the recognition, with officials warning that foreign military presence in Somaliland would be considered interference and could increase instability.

Strategic Importance of Somalia’s Stability
Egypt has repeatedly stressed that Somalia’s stability is critical for the security of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea shipping corridor. Cairo has pledged continued support for Somalia’s state-building efforts, security cooperation, and institutional development.

Turkey and Egypt have already sent weapons and military to Somalia. while Turkey has recently strengthened its power in Somalia as reported by the Araweelo News Network citing diplomatic reports last week.
In recent months, Ankara has built a facility in Mogadishu to host Somalia’s F-16 fighter jets, and Turkey has also brought military aircraft to Somalia during the Horn of Africa campaign.

Turkey and Egypt have both increased their military cooperation with Somalia in recent years, reflecting wider strategic competition and security reforms in the Horn of Africa region.

Egypt has also strengthened military cooperation with Somalia through defense agreements, training support, and participation in regional security operations.

According to a report published by the Araweelo News Network, it indicates that the F-16 planes from Turkey arrived in Mogadishu in early 2026 to strengthen air power and operations against terrorism

Since Israel’s recognition of Somaliland after more than 35 years without international recognition, regional dynamics have shifted significantly. Somaliland has long been noted for its relative stability, democratic governance, and peaceful transfers of power, having held multiple elections based on a one-person, one-vote system and witnessed five peaceful presidential transitions. These achievements have attracted growing international attention.

However, Somaliland’s political progress and evolving security posture have also generated tensions with neighboring actors, placing it at the center of regional rivalries. Analysts warn that increased competition among regional and global powers risks undermining democratic gains in Somaliland and escalating political and security confrontations in the wider Horn of Africa.
