Mogadishu, Somalia (ANN)— Political negotiations between the Federal Government of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and opposition representatives have collapsed without agreement, increasing uncertainty over Somalia’s electoral roadmap and constitutional reform process as the country approaches a critical political transition period.
The talks were held at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu and involved members of the opposition coalition known as the Future Council. Discussions focused on elections, constitutional amendments, national reconciliation, drought relief efforts, and the fight against extremist threats posed by Al-Shabaab.
Electoral and Constitutional Dispute
At the center of the political crisis is the status of Somalia’s Provisional Constitution of Somalia. The opposition insists that any constitutional amendments must be carried out through broad national consultation involving federal member states and political stakeholders.
Opposition leaders accused the federal government of pursuing unilateral constitutional reforms without achieving national consensus. They also alleged that over 50 parliament members have been restricted from participating in legislative sessions, raising concerns about parliamentary legitimacy and political representation.
The opposition coalition further claimed that its members have been subjected to intimidation, security pressure, and negative media campaigns, though government officials have not issued detailed responses to these allegations.
Government Position
The administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has indicated it will continue with the constitutional review process, describing it as necessary for strengthening governance and institutional reform in Mogadishu.
Government officials maintain that political dialogue remains open and that constitutional modernization is required to stabilize Somalia’s federal system and support long-term democratic development.
Political and Security Context
Somalia continues to face security and humanitarian challenges, including drought crises and ongoing counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab militants. Analysts warn that political disagreements could weaken national unity efforts and complicate international stabilization initiatives.
Regional and International Concern
International partners and diplomatic observers are closely monitoring the political developments in Somalia, urging Somali political actors to prioritize dialogue and consensus-building to avoid further political instability.
Outlook
With only a few months remaining before the end of the current federal institutional term, analysts warn that failure to reach political consensus could intensify electoral uncertainty and deepen political divisions within Somalia’s fragile federal system.
