“The weak and besieged Mogadishu administration has once again embarrassed itself—this time by attacking the BBC for publishing a map that reflects basic, observable reality: Somaliland is not part of Somalia.

This outburst would be laughable if it weren’t so revealing. That respected global institutions like the BBC, The New York Times, and The Guardian consistently distinguish Somaliland from Somalia is not an error—it is the product of decades of serious journalism, grounded in historical facts and on-the-ground reporting.

These are not publications that bend to the insecurities of a regime that cannot even project authority within its own capital. They report what the world already knows: Somaliland stands apart.

Let’s be unequivocal: Somaliland is not a breakaway region. It was a sovereign, internationally recognized state in 1960 that unfortunately entered into a union with untrustworthy Somalia—and rightfully withdrew from it in 1991 after that union collapsed into dictatorship and mass atrocities.

We restored our independence, and since then, Somaliland has terrifically done what Somalia has failed to do for more than three decades: to establish a responsible government accountable for its citizens!

We have built from the ground up a sovereign nation—peaceful, stable, democratic, and credible. In contrast, the administration in Mogadishu remains an externally-funded shell, unable to protect diplomats, incapable of conducting elections, and wholly reliant on international troops to survive. IT IS A STATE IN NAME ONLY!!

So what legitimacy does Mogadishu possess to speak on borders, sovereignty, or representation? It cannot legislate! It cannot defend! It cannot lead! It governs nothing but foreign press statements and borrowed time!

Let us be clear once more: Somaliland does not rely on the maps of others to define its existence. Somaliland exists because its people chose freedom, rebuilt their country, and forged a viable, legitimate state from the ruins of barbaric atrocities and
unionist failure. The world’s most respected media outlets acknowledge this—not out of confusion, but out of recognition of reality on the ground.

If Somalia’s regime spent less time issuing empty condemnations and more time addressing the institutional collapse within its own borders, it might one day begin to earn the credibility Somaliland already possesses.

Until then, our advice remains simple: less noise, more nation-building.”

Hussein Adan Igeh (Deyr),
Spokesman for the President of the Republic of Somaliland.
