Somaliland Ministers Address Media Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Hargeisa (ANN) –The Senior ministers of the Somaliland government speak during a joint press conference in Hargeisa, as regional tensions escalate following Somaliland’s diplomatic developments and growing disputes involving neighboring countries. The briefing comes amid reports of security concerns in western and eastern regions of Somaliland and renewed diplomatic pressure linked to opposition against Somaliland’s recognition.

The Minister of the Presidency of the Republic of Somaliland, Khadar Ahmed Looge, together with senior members of the Somaliland Cabinet, held a joint press conference in Hargeisa today to address recent diplomatic developments following Somaliland’s recognition by Israel.

Among the officials present were press conference the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Transport, Hussein Ahmed Aydeed, Minister of Constitution and Assembly Relations of Somaliland Ahmed Dahir Haji Hassan, along with other government ministers and senior officials.

During the press briefing, the ministers spoke about the international and regional reactions to Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland, noting that the move has drawn strong opposit from the Government of Djibouti, the Federal Government of Somalia in Mogadishu, and several countries outside the region. These countre parties, the ministers said, have taken deliberate diplomatic steps aimed at countering Somaliland’s recognition.

Minister Khadar Ahmed Looge stated that when the new government of President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi (Cirro) took office, relations between Somaliland and Djibouti initially showed signs of improvement. He explained that President Cirro made efforts to restore and strengthen diplomatic ties between the two neighboring countries.
However, Minister Looge noted that Djibouti’s position changed sharply following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.

According to him, the Djiboutian government expressed strong dissatisfaction with the development, despite Somaliland’s continued commitment to peaceful regional cooperation and dialogue.

The Somaliland government reaffirmed that its pursuit of international recognition is based on legal, historical, and political grounds, and emphasized that it remains open to constructive diplomatic engagement with all regional and international partners.

Additional Developments and Regional Security Concerns

The press conference held by Somaliland government ministers comes amid rising tensions and ongoing instability in western regions of Somaliland, where security concerns and regional rivalries have intensified in recent weeks.
Somaliland officials and political observers have accused the Government of Djibouti, led by President Ismail Omar Guelleh, of seeking to fuel tensions along the Somaliland–Djibouti border, allegedly with the aim of creating a regional crisis. According to these claims, armed militia groups operating in border areas are being encouraged to destabilize the region, with accusations that these groups are being politically backed or influenced from Djibouti.

The Somaliland government has also linked these developments to broader diplomatic pressure following Somaliland’s growing international engagements and recent recognition efforts.

Meanwhile, Araweelo News Network has obtained information from independent sources indicating that Turkey has begun transporting military equipment to the eastern coast of Somaliland, specifically to the Lasqoray area, where the Federal Government of Somalia is reported to have facilitated the establishment of a military base.
Although the Government of Somaliland has not officially commented on these reported movements, Lasqoray is internationally and historically recognized as part of Somaliland’s territory.
Sources further informed Araweelo News that Turkey is also reportedly delivering military equipment, including radar systems, to Las Anod, a town located in the Sool region of Somaliland.

Las Anod has recently drawn heightened international attention after officials from the Federal Government of Somalia and representatives from countries opposing Somaliland’s recognition attended an event marking the announcement of a new administration in the town.
These developments are viewed by analysts as part of a coordinated regional and international effort aimed at countering Somaliland’s diplomatic progress, particularly following Israel’s recognition and the growing global discussion around Somaliland’s statehood.
