Dubai / Abu Dhabi (ANN) — The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro), said that among the 193 member states of the United Nations, those who currently oppose Somaliland’s status will eventually understand the political reality between Somaliland and Somalia.
President Cirro made the remarks during an interview with Sky Television in the United Arab Emirates, where he has been on an official working visit for several days following his participation in major world international economic and diplomatic meetings in Dubai.
During the interview, questions were presented in Arabic while the President delivered his responses in English, reflecting what observers described as a calm and diplomatic tone.
The Somaliland leader emphasized Somaliland’s long-standing claim to statehood and expressed confidence that international recognition will expand over time, despite continued opposition from Somalia and some regional actors.
His comments come amid growing geopolitical debate in the Horn of Africa following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in late 2025, which triggered strong reactions from Somalia, Turkey, Egypt, and several regional organizations.
Somaliland has operated as a self-governing territory since declaring independence in 1991, though most countries and international organizations still officially recognize Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Recent interviews and statements from Somaliland officials suggest the government believes further international engagement and economic partnerships could gradually increase global recognition of Somaliland’s status.
