Hargeisa (ANN)- The Ministry of Civil Aviation the Republic of Somaliland, has imposed strict orders on aircraft using its airspace.
In a recent press release issued by the Ministry, it was stated that any flight entering Somaliland airspace without permission will be considered a violation of the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Somaliland.
Accordingly, action will be taken in accordance with national and international aviation regulations.
The press release also noted that the Somaliland government will enhance the safety and security of flights using its airspace, through the procedures of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The order came after the air dispute between the Republic of Somaliland and the Federal Government of Somalia intensified, with the Somali government’s aviation department issuing threatening orders to airlines carrying people without an E-Visa.
This affected Somaliland citizens who were frustrated by the Federal Government of Somalia’s decision after some airlines complied.
The letter, dated 31 October 2025, was sent to Flydubai and Ethiopian Airlines after the Mogadishu team saw people arriving in Hargeisa without an e-visa. According to the letter, their campaign is specifically targeting people traveling to Hargeisa.
“The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) has officially issued a notice and order to immediately implement strict screening procedures at all points of departure for passengers. It is to be specifically ensured that all passengers traveling to Hargeisa have an e-visa for Somalia before they travel.”
The dispute poses a potential risk to aviation, as Somaliland and Somalia issue different regulations for passenger flights entering the airspace.
