Londom (ANN)- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has told the House of Commons that the United Kingdom will not participate in offensive U.S. or Israeli military strikes against Iran, emphasizing that any British military involvement must be lawful and strictly defensive.
Addressing Members of Parliament amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Starmer said the UK stands with its allies in confronting threats but will not engage in unlawful or pre-emptive military action.
“We will always act in accordance with international law,” Starmer said, stressing that Britain’s role would be limited to defensive operations designed to protect British citizens, assets, and treaty obligations.
Defensive Posture Only
The Prime Minister made clear that while the UK remains committed to collective security arrangements and partnerships with Washington and other allies, it will not take part in offensive campaigns inside Iran.
Officials indicated that Britain may permit limited defensive use of bases or facilities in line with collective self-defence principles under international law. However, Starmer rejected suggestions that the UK would join direct strikes on Iranian territory.
The statement comes as the United States continues military operations against Iranian-linked targets, raising concerns about broader regional escalation.
Focus on Diplomacy
Starmer reiterated that the UK government continues to support diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation and negotiated solutions.
“We stand against threats,” he said, “but our objective remains stability and peace through lawful means.”
British lawmakers across parties have called for caution, urging the government to avoid being drawn into a widening conflict while safeguarding national security interests.
Britain’s Position in the Crisis
The UK’s position reflects a balancing act: maintaining strong alliances with the United States and Israel while avoiding direct participation in offensive military actions that could expand the war.
Analysts say the government’s emphasis on international law and defensive action signals a clear attempt to distance Britain from escalation while preserving strategic partnerships.
As the Middle East crisis unfolds, London’s stance underscores the legal and political sensitivities surrounding foreign military engagement.
Further developments are expected as diplomatic efforts continue and regional tensions remain high.
