Tehran (ANN) — Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media platforms, including X, claim that former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence chief Hossein Taeb has been arrested over alleged links to Israel’s Mossad.
There has been no official confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the claims.
According to the circulating reports, Taeb — who once led the powerful intelligence wing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — is suspected by some within Iran’s security establishment of involvement in intelligence breaches. The allegations intensified after claims emerged that he abruptly left a high-level meeting with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei shortly before recent U.S.–Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets.
These claims remain unverified and appear to originate primarily from online sources rather than official statements.
Background: Taeb’s Removal in 2022
Taeb, long regarded as a powerful and controversial figure within Iran’s security apparatus, was removed from his post as IRGC intelligence chief in 2022 following a series of high-profile security breaches and alleged Israeli intelligence operations inside Iran. At the time, Iranian media reported structural changes within the Guard’s intelligence leadership, though no criminal accusations were publicly announced.
His tenure had been marked by aggressive internal security policies and counter-espionage campaigns, particularly amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv.
Rising Internal Pressure?
Analysts note that if such an arrest were to be confirmed, it would signal intensified internal scrutiny within Iran’s leadership at a time of heightened regional conflict. Iran has increased military and proxy activity across the region amid ongoing hostilities involving Israel and U.S. forces.
Speculation about internal “cleansing” or counter-intelligence operations has grown in parallel with expanding military tensions. However, without official confirmation, it remains unclear whether the reports reflect genuine internal developments or are part of information warfare during a period of regional instability.
Information War and Strategic Messaging
Experts caution that wartime environments often produce waves of unverified reports, psychological operations, and narrative battles aimed at undermining confidence within adversarial systems.
At present, Iranian state media has not acknowledged any arrest of Taeb, nor have credible international outlets independently verified the claims.
