Washington(ANN)-American imperialism was reflected by the United States’ veto of a UN resolution calling for the protection of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, an American writer and political activist says.

Ralph Schoenman, former personal secretary of British philosopher Bertrand Russell, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Saturday.

Out of the 15 UN Security Council members, Russia, France and China along with seven others voted in favor of the resolution on Friday, while four including Britain abstained.

The draft called for “the consideration of measures to guarantee the safety and protection of the Palestinian civilian population in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in the Gaza Strip.”

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour said the veto risked “undermining the council’s credibility and authority,” and proved that the US had “extreme mal-intent.”

“The resolution at the United Nations calling for the support of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories and Gaza is a minimal demand for defending the human rights and sovereign rights of the population under permanent siege by the Zionist state,” Schoenman said.

“Gaza is virtually a concentration camp where people are starved to death, where minimal medical supplies are absent, where any attempt to sustain life is met by predation and bombardment and blockade,” he stated.

The analyst said Gaza is “a permanent concentration camp of suppression which is sustained by Israel with the full support of the United States — to be expected that US imperialism was reflected in vetoing any attempt by people in the United Nations — by various nations and groups who provide minimal support.”

On Thursday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Washington will “unquestionably veto” the UN draft resolution calling for the protection of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Haley called the text drafted by Kuwait on behalf of Arab countries as a “grossly one-sided approach that is morally bankrupt and would only serve to undermine ongoing efforts toward peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.”

Kuwait presented its draft two weeks ago that called for an international protection mission for the Palestinians.

A final watered-down version of the Kuwaiti resolution calls for “the consideration of measures to guarantee the safety and protection” of Palestinian civilians.
