Washington (ANN) – The United States military has confirmed that a U.S. fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone that was approaching the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, in an incident that risks further escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The recent incident involving a drone near the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln comes amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, with both countries exchanging strong warnings following threats of possible military action by U.S. President Donald Trump.
A spokesperson for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), Captain Tim Hawkins, said after the incident that an Iranian drone approached the USS Abraham Lincoln while a U.S. F-35 fighter jet was operating from the carrier.
He said the ship was operating about 500 miles (approximately 800 km) off Iran’s southern coast when the Iranian drone approached the vessel with what officials described as an unclear purpose.
On the same day, reports indicated that six Iranian boats attempted to approach and board a U.S.-flagged oil tanker while it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz, an area where Iran’s Revolutionary Guard maintains strong naval presence.
Iran is also believed to have deployed additional drones that flew near or over the USS Abraham Lincoln operating in the Gulf of Oman or the Arabian Sea.
Analysts say the moves appear aimed at demonstrating Iran’s ability to challenge U.S. military presence in the region, signaling that Tehran is capable not only of defensive action but also of potentially launching serious attacks if tensions escalate further.
Iran officially acknowledged the incident involving the boats but claimed that the oil tanker had entered waters that Iran considers part of its territory. However, Iran did not officially claim responsibility for drones reportedly flying near the U.S. carrier.
There are also unconfirmed reports that some drones could have been launched by Yemen’s Houthi forces, which are widely considered among Iran’s strongest regional allies. However, Araweelo News Network cannot independently verify these claims.
President Trump has significantly increased U.S. military presence in the region in an effort to pressure Iran into negotiations. However, diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing war currently appear fragile and uncertain.
International experts and regional powers have warned that any war between the United States and Iran would be unpredictable, with potentially devastating consequences for the region and global stability.
Reports also suggest tensions around mediation efforts. Iran is believed to have rejected proposals for negotiations in Turkey, reportedly telling the United States that if talks are to occur, they should be held in Oman instead.
Other reports indicate that President Trump expressed hope that negotiations could take place soon. Meanwhile, Turkey has attempted to play a mediating role, with Turkish officials holding multiple meetings with Iran’s foreign minister in an effort to prevent conflict.
However, reports indicate that Iran insisted negotiations should focus strictly on the nuclear issue, excluding other regional or security matters.
Analysts say Iran appears to be balancing diplomacy with military preparedness. Toward the end of last year, Iran reportedly experienced unexpected attacks during a period of diplomatic engagement — an experience that analysts believe has made Iranian leadership more cautious.
Despite ongoing diplomatic discussions, there are no guarantees that conflict can be avoided, and concerns remain high that the region could slide into wider war.
