Washington, (ANN)-Midterm voters say former US Vice President Joe Biden has the most chance among potential Democratic nominees to defeat Republican President Donald Trump in 2020, an Election Day opinion poll has found

The Reuters/Ipsos exit poll found that 29 percent of voters supported a Biden nomination, putting him at top of the list of Democratic runners for the upcoming presidential election.

Finishing second in the hypothetical field with 22 percent was Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, an Independent whose 2016 candidacy was allegedly sabotaged by Democrats in favor of former First lady Hillary Clinton.

Tying the rest of the poll were Senators Cory Booker of New Jersey, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kamala Harris of California.

On the Republican side, 65 percent of midterm voters said they would like to see Trump run for a second term in 2020.

Another 11 percent said they would prefer a presidential push by Vice President Mike Pence and 12 percent said they did not know yet.

In a hypothetical matchup against Trump all of the Democrats fared well.

The poll found that Biden would beat Trump 51 percent to 39 percent in the popular vote.

Trump scored the best result against Booker, losing to him by only 4 percentage points in the matchup.

It must be noted that opinion polls this early always favor candidates who enjoy wider name recognition.

In 2016, Clinton was also projected as the potential winner against Trump in most polls. She even won the popular vote by nearly 3 million ballots but lost the presidential election to Trump who won the most Electoral College votes.

On the Republican side, the 2014 congressional midterm elections had marked Jeb Bush, who ultimately lost his bid for the Republican nomination, to be the front-runner not to mention that most polls did not even include Trump.
