HARGEISA (ANN) – Somaliland’s House of Elders (Guurti) Committee for Conflict Resolution has issued an official peace resolution aimed at ending the recent inter-community conflict in the Awdal and Salal regions, following a reconciliation conference held in Geerisa. The committee’s decision is documented in a series of signed resolutions and implementation guidelines.

According to the documents, 62 traditional elders representing both communities were formally sworn in on 3 August 2026, pledging to work together to restore peace, prevent further violence, and oversee implementation of the agreement within their respective communities.
The resolution was addressed to:
The Ciise (Geerisa) community.
The Gadabuursi (Boorama) community.
The Governors of Awdal and Salal regions.
Copies were also sent to Somaliland’s Minister of Interior, the Speaker of the House of Elders (Guurti), and the President of Somaliland.
Key Provisions of the Agreement
The signed documents outline several measures intended to secure lasting peace:
Immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities.
Full implementation of previous peace commitments.
Establishment of mechanisms to resolve disputes through dialogue.
Protection of civilian lives and property.
Cooperation with security agencies to prevent renewed violence.
Rejection of revenge attacks and retaliatory killings.
Promotion of peaceful coexistence between the two communities.
Traditional elders to monitor compliance and report violations.
Legal action against individuals who undermine the peace process.

Committee Appeal
The Guurti committee called upon religious leaders, traditional elders, youth, women, regional authorities, and security institutions to support the implementation of the agreement and preserve stability in western Somaliland.
The committee emphasized that maintaining peace is a shared responsibility and urged all parties to refrain from actions or statements that could reignite tensions.
