Mekella(ANN)-For the past few weeks huge rallies have been taking place in all the cities and towns of Tigrai state demanding the federal government to stop disrespecting the Ethiopian constitution. They also wanted the Ethiopian government to stop working with destructive forces that are hell-bent to undo what has been accomplished in the past 27 years in the name of change, but in practice all they want is to bring back the old system of one language, one religion, and one people and deny the rights of the majority Ethiopians.
Saturday’s massive rally was a conclusion of the all rallies throughout Tigrai state for the whole month. Tens of thousands of people attended the rally in the beautiful city of Mekelle carrying banners that demand respect to the Ethiopian constitution, stop ethnic conflict, stop targeting Tigraians and other ethnics in the name corruption, stop attacking and blaming Tigrai and many more. Last month a former TPLF fighter and a respected general was paraded on national TV after he was arrested peacefully in front of his hotel and before he was charged with any crime. He was handcuffed inside the helicopter transporting him for humiliation purposes. The action angered the people of Tigrai not because one person was arrested, but the way it was done was to denigrate and disrespect those who fought and defeated the Dergi regime. It seems the people of Tigrai had enough of the nonsense going on in Ethiopia new.
The Deputy President of Tigrai, Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael gave a passionate and brilliant speech delighting the vast audience in the capital of Tigrai. Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael gave serious warning to those who are leading the disastrous crusade against the Ethiopian constitution in the name of change. “From now on, those who are repeatedly rejecting the demand of the people, ignoring the voice of the people and giving them a deaf ear will pay a heavy price.” The mild mannered, but stern leader of Tigrai state added “from now on, violating the Ethiopian constitution will not continue. Either the voice of the people needs to be heard, or it will be heard!”
Dr. Debretsion additionally sent a clear and unmistakable message to the people of Eritrea. He said the people and government of Tigrai would work to strengthen the newly started peace process. He added the government of Tigrai will do whatever is needed for Eritreans who live in Tigrai to live and work freely without any worry. Since the re rapprochement of the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments, the Tigrai state government and people have been saying everything about the peace process shoud include the people in the border area. Despite the strong demand of the Tigrai people for real people to people reconciliation, Dr. Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afwerki decided to exclude the people and government of Tigrai and signed unknown deal in Saudi Arabia.
The new administration in Ethiopia has been at odds with the state of Tigrai to put it mildly. Recently the Abiy Ahmed government started targeting Tigraian politicians, business people, military leaders and TPLF veterans in the name human rights abuse and corruption. It is also indirectly working with the radical elements of Amara region to displace thousands of civilian Tigraians from the region. Lately there have been fake identity questions raised in Amara region on behalf of Tigrai people in the west and south of the state. All these provocation didn’t go unnoticed by the people of Tigrai hence the reason for the people to make their voice heard in the huge rallies including the mother of all rallies in the northern star city of Mekelle the capital city of Tigrai state.
The people of Tigrai have made their stand crystal clear which is if mercenary government would not stop violating the Ethiopian federal constitution, we will not stand and wait until it is completely demolished we will consider all options available to us.
