To truly understand the political situation that has persisted in Somalia for the past 34 years, it is essential to examine the historical context of the two regions: South Somalia, formerly known as Italian Somalia, and North Somalia, formerly British Somaliland. These areas were unified in 1960, marking a significant moment in their histories. By exploring the factors surrounding this unification, we can gain valuable insights into the underlying issues that have contributed to the current challenges facing the nation. This approach will not only help us identify the root causes of the ongoing turmoil but will also guide us toward potential solutions for a more stable and peaceful future.
Understanding the cultural and socio-political distinctions between Somalia and Somaliland is essential for appreciating their unique identities. These differences stem from a variety of historical, social, and political factors that have shaped each region over time.
Somalia has endured a complex array of challenges, heavily influenced by decades of conflict, entrenched political instability, and the enduring impacts of colonial legacies that have shaped its historical narrative. The nation is home to a vibrant population composed of a multitude of clans and ethnic groups, each contributing a distinctive set of customs, traditions, and nomadic lifestyles. While it is often the agro-pastoralist communities that are not spotlighted in the conflict, it is crucial to recognise that the nomadic communities, who often face harsh living conditions and limited resources, are at the heart of many underlying tensions.
This dynamic continues to create significant obstacles in the quest for a cohesive national identity and governance structure that truly reflects the aspirations and needs of all Somali people.
On the other hand, the Republic of Somaliland has sought to establish itself as a distinct entity since its restated of independence in 1991, following the collapse of the Somali central government. Somaliland has developed its political system, with a focus on democratic governance and regional stability. The people of Somaliland have worked diligently to cultivate a sense of national identity that is separate from the broader Somali context, promoting their unique history, culture, and aspirations for the democratic nation in the region.

- Establishment A confederal system is a loose alliance of independent states or regions that voluntarily come together to form a weak central authority, mainly for limited purposes like defence or trade.
- One of the most pressing challenges Somalia face today is the absence of strong, democratic, and honest leadership. This vacuum has led to division, mistrust, and political stagnation across federal states. Now more than ever, it is essential that Somali people come together to elect a qualified leader—someone who is guided not by personal ambition or the hunger for power, but by a sincere commitment to national unity and progress. Somalia need a leader who can bridge divides, uphold democratic principles, and inspire trust among all citizens, regardless of region or background.”
- Launch National Reconciliation
- Rebuild National Army: Create a unified, professional army under government control, not clan militias.
- Avoid Proxy Wars: Don’t allow Somalia to become a battleground for Gulf states, Turkish, Egyptian or regional rivalries.
- The upcoming presidential election should be conducted, as usual, through direct elections by the parliament since, at this time, a one-person, one-vote system is not possible.
