We, the concerned citizens of the Republic of Somaliland, wish to express our profound concern and unequivocal condemnation of the ongoing inflammatory rhetoric and reckless behaviour exhibited by Mr. Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, a minister of Defence, who is one of the terrorist groups within the Somali federal government, known as Villa Somalia.
Mr. Fiqi has consistently opted for a path of provocation rather than peace, choosing hostility over constructive dialogue, and perpetuating misinformation instead of embracing factual discourse. His relentless efforts to undermine the sovereignty, stability, and developmental progress of Somaliland are not only wholly unacceptable but also perilously disconnected from the evolving geopolitical landscape of the Horn of Africa.
Over the past three decades, the people of Somaliland have worked tirelessly to establish a peaceful, democratic, and self-governing nation, setting themselves apart from the political instability and chaos that continue to plague our neighbor Somalia. Our achievements in governance, security, and economic development are evident and indicative of our commitment to peace. Moreover, our fundamental right to determine our own destiny and govern ourselves is non-negotiable and must be respected.
Mr. Fiqi’s inflammatory remarks serve as an affront to the will of our people and a flagrant violation of established diplomatic norms. His preoccupation with reversing the irreversible outcome of the 1991 dissolution of the failed union between Somaliland and Somalia is not reflective of genuine leadership. Instead, it reveals a dangerous fixation rooted in an outdated, irredentist ideology that fails to acknowledge the historical context and the democratic choices made by our citizens.
We call upon the international community, including regional partners and allies, to take serious note of the harmful narratives propagated by certain factions within the Somali government. It is imperative that they stand resolute in supporting dialogue, promoting mutual respect, and recognizing the indelible realities that exist within the region.
The Republic of Somaliland will not be intimidated, derailed, or silenced. Our sovereignty is acknowledged by international law, our democratic process is a model admired by many, and our determination to uphold our rights and cultivate our future is unwavering.
We urge all responsible voices within Somalia and the broader international community to denounce these divisive tactics and work collectively towards a peaceful future grounded in truth, mutual recognition, and regional cooperation. Only through collaboration and respect can we pave the way for a harmonious coexistence that honours the aspirations of all peoples in the region.
Many observers, like Prof. Abdi Ismail Samater, Dr. Bayle and others, especially believe that Ahmed Moalim Fiqi’s behaviour goes beyond the norms of diplomacy and responsible leadership. Rather than seeking peaceful coexistence or respecting Somaliland’s self-governance, he consistently:
Spews inflammatory rhetoric that fuels tension instead of promoting regional stability
Undermines Somaliland’s democratic process, including attacking its institutions and agreements with foreign nations
Ignores the reality on the ground, pretending that Somaliland is still under Mogadishu’s control, which is false and misleading
Disrespects the will of millions of Somalilanders, who chose peace, democracy, and restated independence since 1991
In short, his conduct is irresponsible, confrontational, and deeply detached from reality — not just ignorant, but he is the sick man in Somalia, and he is a misanthrope.
