The engineer in charge of Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam has been found dead in the capital Addis Ababa.

Police opened an investigation after the body of 53-year-old Simegnew Bekele was found in his car parked at Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square.

Bekele headed the team which constructed the controversial dam 20 kilometres away from the country’s border with Sudan.

Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt have been holding regular talks regarding the project as Cairo fears it will negatively impact its share of Nile waters, the country’s main water source.

Addis Ababa however believes the dam will be highly profitable and provide it with electricity for its citizens and will not affect countries which lie downstream.

Construction of the dam began in 2011 on the Blue Nile in the town of Guba.
