Tel Aviv (ANN)-Houthis say they fired ‘hypersonic missile’ towards Ben Gurion airport, but the Israeli military said on Sunday that it had intercepted a missile launched from Yemen towards Israel in an attack by Yemen’s Houthis. Sirens sounded in several areas in the country, the Israeli military said earlier.
Meinwhile Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group was responsible for Sunday’s attack, adding that it fired a missile towards Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv. Houthis say they fired ‘hypersonic missile’ towards Ben Gurion airport.
The Israeli and US bombings in Yemen and the Israeli bombings in Gaza and the siege on the Palestinian people are coming at a time when voices from around the world are growing louder, rejecting what Israel is doing in Gaza.
US President Donald Trump announced this month that the US would stop bombing the Houthis in Yemen because the group had agreed to stop attacking US ships under an Oman-mediated ceasefire deal. However, the accord did not include Israel.
Five al-Qaeda members have been killed in a strike blamed on the United States in southern Yemen, two Yemeni security sources told AFP on Saturday.
“Residents of the area informed us of the US strike… five Al-Qaeda members were eliminated,” said a security source in Abyan province, which borders the seat of Yemen’s internationally-recognized government in Aden.
“The US strike on Friday evening north of Khabar Al-Maraqsha killed five,” said a second source, referring to a mountainous area known to be used by al-Qaeda.
The second security source added that, though the names of those killed in the strike were not known, it was believed one of al-Qaeda’s local leaders was among the dead.
Washington once regarded the group, known as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), as the militant network’s most dangerous branch.
AQAP grew and developed in the chaos of Yemen’s war, which since 2015 has pitted the Iran-backed Houthis against an Arab-led coalition backing the government.
On the other hand, the military spokesperson for Yemen’s Ansarallah group (the Houthis), Yahya Saree, announced last week that the group has begun enforcing a naval blockade on the port of Haifa in Israel, in line with directives issued by its leadership. Israel’s largest port Haifa, has been a target for Yemen’s Houthis, and was promised financial aid last year.
In an official statement, Saree warned: “We alert companies whose vessels are currently docked at this port or heading towards it that Haifa has, from the moment of this statement’s release, become one of our targets. These companies must take this announcement and any future ones into serious consideration.”
He added that the decision followed the group’s successful enforcement of a blockade on Eilat Port, which has since ceased operations.“We will not hesitate to take further necessary measures in support of our oppressed Palestinian people and their brave resistance,” Saree said.
He stressed that “all military decisions and measures related to the Israeli enemy — including support operations and both air and naval blockades will be suspended only when the aggression against Gaza stops and the siege is lifted.”
The spokesperson further explained that these actions were a direct response to what he described as Israel’s intensifying assault on Gaza. “The enemy has escalated its brutal aggression against our brothers and people in Gaza, committing dozens of massacres daily and killing hundreds in an unprecedented campaign the likes of which the world has never witnessed,” he explained.
He clarified that the blockade is also a reaction to the ongoing siege and starvation imposed on Gaza, and to Israel’s refusal to end its military operations and lift its blockade.
The Israeli occupation forces resumed their offensive on the Gaza Strip at dawn on 18 March, launching air strikes across the enclave. The renewed assault came in violation of a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, which had lasted nearly 60 days.
Voices from around the world are growing stronger, rejecting what Israel is doing in Gaza. thousands of people gathered in Stockholm, Paris, and Berlin on Saturday to protest their governments’ silence on Israel’s occupation and ongoing military offensives in the Gaza Strip, calling for immediate international intervention and sanctions against Tel Aviv, Anadolu reports.
In Stockholm, hundreds of people gathered at Odenplan Square in response to calls from various civil society organizations urging the Swedish government to take a stand against Israel’s ongoing war crimes in Gaza.
Protesters marched to Sweden’s Foreign Ministry, chanting “Freedom for Palestine” and “No to Netanyahu’s Plan.”
Speaking with Anadolu, Swedish activist Lars Ohly, who attended the protest, said it is unacceptable that Sweden remained silent in the face of Israel’s genocide against Palestinians.
Ohly emphasized that over 50,000 people have been killed, including more than 15,000 children, and urged the Swedish government to take decisive action against the ethnic cleansing and occupation of Gaza.
In Paris, Palestinian supporters gathered at Bourse Square to demand sanctions against Israel and unhindered passage of humanitarian aid convoys into Gaza.
Demonstrators highlighted the dire food shortage by banging empty pots and pans and chanting slogans such as “Israel is a murderer, Macron is an accomplice” and “There is genocide in Gaza, we will not remain silent.”
Myriem, a 44-year-old protester, told Anadolu that she came to the demonstration to oppose the French government’s stance on Israel’s attacks in Gaza and to show solidarity with the suffering Palestinian people.
She described the restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza as “inhumane” and a “scandal,” calling on immediate public mobilization.
In Berlin, around 1,000 people gathered at Oranienplatz to protest Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
Protesters chanted slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine,” “Germany finances, Israel bombs,” “Israel is a terrorist state,” and “Stop the genocide.”
During the demonstration, speakers stressed that no person or state has the authority to deny, displace, or kill an entire people of their rights. Some Germans of Jewish descent also supported the protest demonstration.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
Earlier this month, the United States agreed a ceasefire with the Houthis, who have controlled large swathes of Yemen for more than a decade, ending weeks of intense American strikes on Houthi-held areas of the country.
The Houthis began firing at shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in November 2023, weeks after the start of the Israel-Hamas war, prompting military strikes by the US and Britain beginning in January 2024.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis have continued to fire missiles at Israel in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
The conflict in Yemen has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, although fighting decreased significantly after a UN-negotiated six-month truce in 2022.
the Israel-Hamas war beging in October 2023,To date, more than 53,300 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its genocidal campaign in the enclave in October 2023. Experts warn the real number of those killed is significantly higher as many Palestinians are missing, presumed dead under the rubble of their homes.
