.Professor Salah Jama Hussein, one of Somalia’s most distinguished intellectuals and a renowned scholar of philosophy, literature, and poetry, has passed away in Canada, where he spent the latter part of his life. He was 71.
Born in 1955, Professor Hussein received his primary and intermediate education in his hometown before graduating from Banadir Secondary School in Mogadishu. He later pursued higher studies at Cornell University in the United States, specializing in philosophy and literary studies.

Through his writings, translations, and lectures, he enriched discussions on literature, culture, and philosophical inquiry, establishing himself as one of Somalia’s foremost scholars.
In addition to his academic pursuits, he served in Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Protocol Department and worked with the state-run newspaper Xiddigta Oktoobar during his early years. According to accounts of his life, he was sentenced to ten years in prison in 1973 while still a secondary school student. He later left Somalia in 1976 and settled in North America, where he continued his scholarly and literary endeavors.
