Nairobi (ANN)-The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro), and his delegation, who are still in Nairobi, have cut the ribbon on the Somaliland office that will become the building of the Somaliland embassy in Kenya.

The President and his delegation arrived at the liaison office in Nairobi, Kenya this morning, accompanied by the Somaliland representative in Kenya, Ambassador Mohamed Ahmed Mahmoud (Mohamed Barawani), and a grand ceremony was held to open the office, attended by officials from the Kenyan government and foreign diplomats. Also attending the event were businessmen and some Somaliland diaspora members from the Somaliland community in Nairobi.

As reported by the Kenyan media, The Republic of Somaliland’s Mission office was opened in Nairobi on Thursday, May 29, during a ceremony presided over by the de facto Republic of Somaliland president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro). Among Kenyan leaders who attended the event were Uasin Gishu Governor, Jonathan Bii, and Marsabit Senator Mohamed Said Chute.

“It was great honor and pleasure to welcome H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi the President of the Republic of Somaliland on the occasion of opening our new premise of Somaliland Mission in Kenya.” Ambassador Barawani wrote on his “X” Twitter.

Somaliland’s Mission in Nairobi serves a Somaliland President Visit to Kenya and Controversial Statements in Foreign Affairs, with its key roles including trade and investment, consular services, political engagement, and community support.

Related: The statement from the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dated 26 May 2025, was posted on the “X” Twitter account.

The inauguration comes barely two days after the Kenyan government halted the planned opening of the Somaliland Liaison Office, citing its recognition of the Federal Government of Somalia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a directive stating that the Liaison Office could not be upgraded to a diplomatic mission, reinforcing its commitment to Somalia’s territorial integrity. But the Kenyan government has diplomatically corrected the issue, after receiving responses through diplomatic channels led by Western countries that support the cause of Somaliland and its importance to regional stability.

Despite this setback, Somaliland proceeded with the launch of the Mission office. The Liason Office was to be launched on Tuesday, May 27. 2025.

Leaders and Somaliland stakeholders have praised the inauguration, terming it a significant milestone in the nation’s diplomatic presence in East Africa.

Somalia may view this move as Kenya undermining its sovereignty, potentially straining bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Somaliland, being a key trading partner for Kenya, especially in the livestock and miraa sector, the mission could facilitate business agreements, boosting trade between Kenya and Somaliland. But Kenya, which also has more than 800 teachers in Somaliland, sees this move as of great importance for relations with Somaliland.

Kenyan and international media have described the beautiful building of the Somaliland office as of great importance to the region, and it is seen as a diplomatic move by the Republic of Somaliland in the region.
