Somaliland #Police arrested him after he released a shocking report on the condition of the hospital, with a flashlight lit for Women as they give birth.

Hargeisa(ANN)-The chairman of the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA), Zakariye Ahmed Muhumed, has expressed his sorrow over the arrest of Mohamed Abdi Omar alias (Mohamed Wadin) in Gabiley last week.

 

Police arrested journalist Mohamed after he published a report for spreading shocking news about the Kala-baydh Hospital in Wajale, which has been without electricity for 20 days, which resulted in a torch being lit for a woman in labour who wanted to give birth at the hospital.

The chairman of the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA), Zakariye Ahmed Mohumed, accompanied by members of the SOLJA Committee, visited the jailed journalist today, after which the chairman of SOLJA, who spoke to the media, described the journalist’s detention as illegal.

“We urge the authorities in Gabiley region to refrain from arresting journalists, which is detrimental to the independence of journalists,” he said.

Residents, meanwhile, described the journalist’s arrest as wrong, saying the incident he described was justified.

Among the speakers was a mother who gave birth in a hospital with a lit flashlight  during labour  to give birth in the hospital, and said she was the one victim who touched the report published by journalist Mohamed Abdi Omar.

“I was in the hospital when I was in labour, a flashlight was lit for me to get the baby out. What the reporter said was true, and we are condemning the journalist’s arrest.” said the mother of the victim.
