Mogadishu, Somalia (ANN)-, September 13th, 2023 — Today, the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia, led by H.E. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and the Government of the Republic of Italy, led by H.E. Ambassador Alberto Vecchi, inaugurated the Towards Peace and Stability in Somalia (TPSS) Fund. This momentous event marks a historic milestone in the longstanding and cooperative relations between the two nations.

The launching ceremony was attended by high-level representatives from the federal government, diplomatic missions in Somalia, development cooperation agencies, representatives from UN agencies, as well as National and international NGOs.

The event commenced with a warm welcome as participants arrived, fostering an atmosphere of unity and collaboration. The gathering first witnessed a poignant moment as a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place, symbolizing the inauguration of a promising venture for Somalia’s future.

Following that, a brief presentation introduced the TPSS Fund, outlining its vision to empower government institutions, prioritize beneficiaries, and address both urgent needs and long-term drivers of stability.

The program continued with brief remarks from H.E. Sadat Mohamed Nur Aliyow, State Minister of the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation. These remarks emphasized the timeliness of this imitative as the current offensive against Al-Shabaab, with H.E. Dr Hassan Sheikh Mohamud leading efforts in the frontline, represents a critical turning point in our fight against extremism, hence the need to accelerate stabilization efforts in tangible ways.

The keynote address, delivered by His Excellency Ambassador Alberto Vecchi of the Republic of Italy, highlighted Italy’s commitment to supporting sustainable peace and prosperity in Somalia. he stressed “The TPSS Fund embodies a shared commitment to peace, stability, and resilience in Somalia. It aims to empower government institutions by utilizing country systems and promoting government-led stabilization efforts. Its primary objective is to promote tangible peace, stability, and resilience in Somalia by targeting interventions that put beneficiaries first.” He further stressed Italy’s commitment to the Fund’s long-term success.

In his closing remarks, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre expressed his deep appreciation for the support and collaboration of all stakeholders in this fight against Al-Shabaab. He also thanked Ambassador Vecchi and the government of Italy for taking the lead in establishing the TPSS Fund, “a groundbreaking and daring initiative that aims to reshape the future of our nation”. He outlined the significance of the TPSS Fund in empowering Somalia to take the lead in delivering tangible benefits to its citizens, thereby fostering lasting peace and stability. The Prime Minister also outlined the Fund’s ambitious fundraising goal and called on donors and partners to take an active part in contributing to this pool of funding.

The event concluded with a press briefing, providing an opportunity for journalists to seek clarifications and insights from the participants. The TPSS Fund’s launch was met with optimism and enthusiasm, marking a crucial step toward achieving lasting peace and prosperity in Somalia.
