Addis Ababa(ANN)-The British government has warned its citizens in Ethiopia that the security situation is deteriorating as fighting continues for a year and a few months in the north of the country, but is now approaching the capital Addis Ababa.
“You have to leave Ethiopia now while there are still business options. It is likely to be very difficult to leave Ethiopia in the coming days. “The British embassy in Addis Ababa has renewed its warning to its citizens in Ethiopia, as the situation worsens,” the British embassy in Addis Ababa said in a statement.
The Office of Foreign Affairs, Prosperity and Development (FCO) recommends that all travelers and citizens leave Ethiopia immediately.
“There, is an ongoing military conflict in northern Ethiopia. Military clashes are currently taking place in Tigray, Amhara and Afar states. Conflict has the potential to spread rapidly with little warning. FCDO recommends not travelling to Ethiopia, except at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, because of the risk of fighting spreading to new areas. ”say the statement.
The warning states that consular support is very limited throughout Ethiopia. In the event of deterioration in the political or security situation, the British Embassy may be limited in the assistance that it can provide. Do not rely on the FCDO being able to evacuate you in an emergency.
“Do not rely on FCDO’s ability to evacuate in an emergency. At the moment, there are good business options mostly at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, with most domestic flights operating normally (except Semera, Dessie, Weldiya and Tigray). ” As noted in the warning.
The warning also states that Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is the hub for flights to Africa, and that there is still a chance that flights will run peacefully at the moment, but that opportunity has dwindled. The British embassy issued a warning on 15 November 2021.
