#Ethiopian ship named Gibe has docked at the #port of Berbera in #Somaliland
Berbera (ANN) – The Ethiopian ship named Gibe has docked at the port of Berbera in Somaliland for the first time in two decades.
The ship is part of a fleet of Ethiopian ships, which has been attracted by the development of DP World which controls the port of Berbera.
The Gibe, one of a dozen Ethiopian-owned vessels operated by the Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service (ESLSE), comes two weeks after it was cut off from completion of the modernization and expansion of DP World officially opened by new Terminal Berbera Port.
DP World, a leading logistics solution company, and the Government of Somaliland, on 24 Jun 2021, inaugurated the new container terminal at Berbera Port, following the completion of the first phase of port expansion as part of its development as a major regional business hub serving the Horn of Africa.
The event was attended by officials from Ethiopia. According to the Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service (ESLSE), the Gibe, carrying more than 11,000 tonnes of sugar and rice, was bound for the Gulf of India and arrived at the international port of Berbera on Sunday.
The Consul General of Ethiopia to Somaliland, Seyid Mohammed and the General Manager of Roba Megerssa, welcomed the launch of the Ethiopian Shipping Ship to Berbera Port, and the Dubai Ports Authority attended a ceremony to announce the launch of the Ethiopian Shipping Service, who are using for the port of Berbera, according to local media in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is one of the most populous countries in Africa. Since Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, it has become landlocked, thus relying on its neighbours Djibouti and Somaliland, with most of its cargo landing at the port of Djibouti. has long considered importing most of its cargo from the strategic port of Berbera, has become part of the investment port of Berbera Port, following an agreement by the government of President Ahmed Silanyo at that time to transfer control of the port to international company DP World, following the May agreement in 2016.
The 30-year agreement between the Somaliland government and Dp World, which called for DP World to be handed over to the Berbera port for development, was followed by a project to expand the Berbera port into a modern port worth $ 442 million, with 51% given to DP World, Somaliland 30% and Ethiopia 19%, which encouraged Ethiopia, which has a population of more than 100 million, to import the goods and supplies it needs from the port of Berbera.
DP World has also signed a $ 1 billion investment agreement with the Federal Government of Ethiopia for the Corridor project, which connects Somaliland’s trade with the port of Berbera and landlocked Ethiopia.
DP World Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem described the agreement signed on May 7th, 2021, by both Ethiopia and DP World Company, as important for the development of the region, noting that the strategic port of Berbera in Somaliland is important for trade in the region Horn of Africa.
Meanwhile, the Ethiopian government, keeping an eye on the region’s development and demand for the use of the Berbera port, formed in August 2016, the Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service (ESLSE), which merged with four independent Companies, worked in the maritime transport sector, namely Ethiopian Shipping Companies, Ethiopian Maritime and Transport Service Companies, Dry Port Company; and the former Comet Transportation Company.
ESLSE currently operates more than 11 ships, with a total capacity of 400,000 tonnes, and Ethiopia planned to purchase two new tankers from the East in 2020, In the far-flung parts of Asia, especially China, Korea and Indonesia.

The Ethiopian fleet carries 60 percent of Ethiopia’s imports, while leasing them to other companies to transport goods, and saves money every year, according to officials from the Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service (ESLSE).
