Hargeisa(ANN)-The Somaliland Electoral Commission has issued a hypothetical decision indicating the controversial elections and the time at which they will be held, and it has requested the Parliament (Representatives and Senate) to finalize the draft rules and regulations that needed to be submitted before that time-specified period.

The Electoral Commission was divided on the decision, and two members of the opposition parties said that they were not aware of the decision and were not part of it, so they never accepted it.

The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Muse Haji, issued a decision that clearly shows the division of the seven members of the National Electoral Commission.

In the decision they issued, they said that the election of political organizations should be brought forward and held on December 28, 2023, and be given to a three-party certificate for (10) years, in accordance with article 5, paragraph 3, letter (J), and the National Elections Commission (KDQ) to complete the technicalities in the previous period,” it was said in the statement issued by the National Elections Committee on July 17, 2012.

“The Presidential and Vice Presidential elections are scheduled to be conducted on 13 November 2024 – a month before the expiry of the present term – based on the extension to the presidential term the Guurti (House of Elders) of the Somaliland Parliament made on Resolution GG/JSL/G-03/10/2022 dated 01/10/2022,” the statement added.

The release of the statement follows a decision of the constitutional court earlier in the month returning the privilege of scheduling of the elections to NEC.

But the two representatives of UCID and Wadani in the commission held press conferences and turned their backs on the commission they belonged to and clearly aligned with the position of their parties.

The two members said in a press conference late last night that the decision was not made by the members of the commission but by the chairman and other members after they could not agree to issue a decision among all parties. welcome and related to the elections.
